I know Stefan Sharkansky's work mainly by a superb performance on
a tough takehome midterm exam in my course covering sorting,
searching, data rearrangement, and analysis of algorithms. He made
proficient use of advanced mathematical techniques to get 95%,
where the mean was 52% and the next highest grade was 85%. I was
so impressed with his solutions that I suggested to him, apparently
redundantly, that he should go on for the Ph.D.
